Ahmad ibn Hanbal (d. 241 AH/855 AD) is one of the most important scholars in Islamic history. He wrote one of the most comprehensive works of hadith tradition and was also one of the most famous legal scholars. The Hanbali school of law developed after his death based on his teachings.

Ahmad ibn Hanbal was also a well-known representative and transmitter of the early Muslim doctrine. He wrote several texts on this subject, including this one entitled " Usulu-s-Sunnah - The Basics of the Sunnah ". The term Sunnah refers to Islam as a whole, which already indicates that this short text contains numerous principles of the early Islamic doctrine. This text is particularly important because it was written very early and thus provides a good insight into the early Muslim doctrine.

In order to reflect these facts, this edition has deliberately refrained from providing further explanations and interpretations of the author's own, as well as explanations by later authors. In order to properly understand the early doctrine of the Muslims, it is essential to return to the early texts. This edition is intended to be a contribution to creating awareness of this and to move closer to the goal of a source-based understanding of Islam.
